How it Works

Our approach is quite simple yet effective. Here's what happens when you give us your support.

1.) You sign your letters via the Google Form with your a minimum of your name and full mailing address, and any other information you would like, such as a personalized message to add to the letter.

2.) At this step, if you can afford to send us either $1.50 for your stamps or $4.20 for other materials to paypal.me/letterstolegalizenj, you would be helping us to continue sending letters all the way until we #legalizeit. Although our effort is in collaboration with ACLU People Power, we are a very small team, so unfortunately your donations are not tax-deductible. Nonetheless, we, and others who we send letters for, would be very grateful for whatever you can spare, and we will of course send your letters regardless of whether you can donate.

3.) We see your response to the Google Form and look up who your New Jersey State Senator and Assemblymembers are based on your address. We use the New Jersey State Legislature website, and sometimes NJUMR's website to find who your legislators are.

4.) We then print three copies of your letter with your name and address at the bottom, and each of your New Jersey legislators and their addresses at the top of the letter. We also add the date that your signed the letter, and your personalized message if you gave us one. Here is what a sample letter would look like.

5.) Once we print the three letters, we put them in envelopes like you would with any other letter, with your name and address as the return address in the top left corner, and your legislators' addresses in the center of the letter.

6.) Finally, we put a stamp on each of the envelopes, put them in a public mailbox, and they are on their way!

If you talked to us at one of our petitioning events, you probably signed a letter with us in person. At these events, we may have asked you to sign three letters, but if you seemed to be in a rush, we may have only gotten one signed letter from you. In these cases, we will make two more photo copies of your signed letter, write your lawmakers' addresses on the top of each of the letters after we copy them, and envelope, stamp and send your letters as usual. This way your signature stays intact, and your message can still reach everyone it needs to reach.

There are a few New Jersey Legislators who have introduced bills and therefore should be thanked for their leadership: Senator Nicholas P. Scutari of District 22, Assemblyman James J. Kennedy of District 22, Assemblyman Reed Gusciora of District 15, Assemblyman Tim Eustace of District 38, and Assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll of District 25. The first sentence of letters to these legislators will read "As your constituent, I am writing to thank you for your leadership regarding marijuana legalization in New Jersey," instead of the default "As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to vote in favor of marijuana legalization in New Jersey." The rest of the letters to these legislators, including any personalized message you write, will remain the same.

We're all about transparency. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, feedback or ideas on how to improve our process, please do not hesitate to contact us.
